Is it ethical to hand out an old story you found? Seems that Drake disappeared 17 years ago. I recently found the entire work of Drake's "A Royal Thief" and seems like I'm the only one to have it all. Thru another source it stops at chapter 18 but I have everything. I found his other works there also.

Not a copyright lawyer here, but I suspect that since the author reserved copyright, handing out copies would probably be frowned upon. Which is unfortunate, since the Wayback Machine thinks it has chapters 1-23, which appear to be the last chapters published at draketales.org before it went dark, but the Wayback Machine's crawler was apparently unable to access the text of chapters 19-23.

Not a copyright lawyer, but current copyright law in the USA extends copyright for the life of the author PLUS 90 years. So, in theory, all you have to do is find out if Drake is still alive, and then survive another 90 years past his death, THEN you can hand them out as you wish.

Or you could collect it all and try to find Drake to see if he'd mind.

Thanks for all the help. I'll see if I can find him if he wants to be found.

I tried to locate him but I didn't find him. I did find a mutual friend that said he hasn't contacted him in 15 years. I did find an old friend so it's all good.

I remember when draketales.org went dark. I felt quite a loss at the time and it still makes me wonder what happened. Seems I recall he left a story unfinished or alluded to a sequel of one he'd completed and aside from wondering what happened to him I was a bit salty because it was a story I was really into.

Thru wayback you can only go to chapter 19. I have it all to 28. You can get other stories of his thru the wayback machine and those are complete. I still grabbed both A Place to live and A New Life.

One of Drake's stories is on Nifty at www.nifty.org/nifty/gay/no-sex/moot-pointand a four-part tale is on AwesomeDude -- look for author Drake Hunter in the Author Listing over to the right. It is accessed through the Wayback Machine.

Drake Hunter. My grand nephew's first and middle names. My nephew was a major gamer and his son was going to be a Dragon Hunter come hell or high water.

Yes -- looking at dictionary dot com shows that "drake" is an ancient term for "dragon." Hence, Drake Hunter would be a "dragon hunter." And it's a cool name, as well.

So I got to thinking about this and I remembered copyrighted material can be used as long as the source is properly cited. It seems to me that if it is still available online in its original form, wouldn't it be okay to post it as long as it's properly cited? I mean, who gives the wayback machine permission to use it?
