Has anyone heard from Rob at crvboy lately? I emailed him about three weeks ago and got no response. His last post was a hot mess that appeared to be only partially edited. Circumstances lead me to believe something is rather amiss.

I am not in regular contact with him, so no help here. Hope all is well...

Good news: CRVBOY.ORG was updated April 11 and again today.

This points out the vulnerability of single-owner gay story sites which have not any succession plan. I am aware that Gay Authors and IOMfAtS have succession plans, but am not sure about other sites.

Rob has taken over more than a few now-defunct sites, Driver's being one of the latest. That said, I didn't get any response from him after e-mailing both him and his current active author, so I don't know what his plan is as far as succession goes.

I'm pleased that you've brought up the topic of what happens when a webmaster is no longer able to maintain a website.
On the one hand, a website is usually, I suppose, the property of its creator and it is none of my business about a succession plan. That's why I have hesitated to mention this before.
In the case of a website full of gay fiction, though, it just seems a shame to lose all of that writing if/when a site goes dark.
I'm aware of the Wayback Machine, and I have used it to read stories that are no longer available elsewhere. The trouble with that is that one needs to know the old URL of a website that has gone dark to be able to find it at the Wayback Machine.

The trouble with the Wayback Machine is that sometimes things disappear from it.
An author on GA I used to follow was removed. I used the Wayback Machine to read a story I liked, and then everything except chapter 6 disappeared from the Wayback machine. Then chapter 6 disappeared.
I have seen this happen with other things I have accessed on the Wayback Machine, as well. Even they do not have unlimited storage.
A site which will disappear soon is tedlouis dot com. All of the stories by Ted Louis (and only Ted Louis) are now at Storylover dot us. Some of the other authors are already on other sites, but some may just go "poof!"
In my opinion, an author should be on as many sites as possible so as to minimize this loss.

Interesting if morbid conversation. I wonder if the answer here might be a way to make stories more downloadable for personal reading? I'm not sure anyone would want to take on running a site if I were to suddenly disappear (not that I have any such plans).
