Little update on the car - I haven't had time to work on it and I intentionally planned to work on it last Saturday, and that worked out a little bit. I did take some video, but I'm trying to figure out how to attach some of the bits together to make a single video, for interested parties. I started by putting the rear up in the air and looking at the exhaust. Some nimrod put a cherry bomb in the middle of the car, deleting the catalytic converter. The pipe had separated just after the cherry bomb/glasspack and I reconnected it - but the muffler (cherry bomb brand) had no arms on it to attach the rubber hangars, so the nimrods used metal ribbon (the stuff you see in rolls with holes stamped into it) to secure the end, somewhat. I then put the rear down, but the battery had depleted so I moved on the the next step - the air filter. It's not an easy space to work in, but the filter ended up having an odd stain and it was damp, but didn't smell like gas. The inside of the fuel distributor is kind of interesting on these cars - there is a metal plate, circular, that moves up as the air passes through the filer underneath and channels that to be part of the air fuel mixture. For gas to have gotten tot he filter would have been...interesting.
Can and rotor were FRIED. Black carbon and scoring everywhere. Plugs were fairly new NGKs, but they were wet with gasoline. I put new Bochs's in to replace them. I have new wires as well, but I'm pretty sure the plugs were wet because the tune up parts were so worn. Next I popped the valve cover off - you may recall nimrod painted it orange. The pain was flaking and I did get some in the engine that I had to pick out. I stripped the valve cover with Citrus Strip (2 coats, pretty good result) and then went after it with a wire brush on a drill. The intake side has some rust that wont' give up so I've been soaking it in a chemical that's supposed to eat the rust, but is non-toxic otherwise. After 24 hours it made a little progress, so I wasn't able to paint the valve cover today and start putting things back together. It gets an oil change next, but the major concern outside of the rust is that the transmission fluid smells like gear oil, meaning gear oil is leaking into the trans fluid. I have a new filter and will drain everything out, but over time that will damage the disks and I may have to rebuild the transmission, which is a tall fucking order.
I managed to find 4 'snowflake' rims for the car, just need tires - but not until other major things are solved like the rust and the new straps for the gas tank.

_ First image is the bad rotor and new rotor. Note the carbon scoring. Second is the freshly painted valve cover.

Rotor makes me wonder if/when it ever ran during the past decade or so. Valve cover looks great! If I could just get that excited about my old F-150...

The tune up parts were completely worn out, and after seeing them I wondered how the car ran at all. Looks like the battery is too weak to take a decent charge as well, so that'll have to go. I got the tune up stuff and the valve cover back in place last night and started to remove the interior to get at the floor. I'm sure there is a big hole in the driver's side floor and it'll have to be cut out and a new panel welded in. The holdup is the center console, but then the front carpet will come out and I can get complete access to the floor on both side. Oil change and changing the filter and fluid for the transmission is next, then it's ready to move to my buddy's garage to get the tank down and fix the major rust issues in the trunk and driver's floor.

Got the interior out and found more rust int eh bottom than I'd anticipated. Floor pans for this thing are non-existant. In fact finding parts for it is pretty tough, given it wasn't that popular a car here. I'll snap a few photos, but the small hole I thought was on the driver's side is more like 8-10 inches long and there is one on the passenger side that's maybe 4-6 inches long that I hadn't known about. Oh, and I don't hear the fuel pump running so now I have to get into that. Ugh! Cars are pain.

Yup, that's why my F150 is sitting BEHIND the garage.

I always liked the old square body F150s. The Lariat comes to mind. Fun fact I was going to use an image of a Lariat to represent Chase's truck, but Ryan vetoes it because it was too old and therefore junk. Where's my eyeroll emoji?

Fun fact I was going to use an image of a Lariat to represent Chase's truck, but Ryan vetoes it because it was too old and therefore junk. Where's my eyeroll emoji? Yeah, I'm pretty fond of the "Bullnose" (7th generation, 1980-86) Fords. Mine is an '86 F150 XLT Lariat that Carfax can't figure out just how many owners or how many miles it has on it. It was in pretty sad shape when I got it and didn't run more than a few months before the engine and transmission crapped out, so I decided to do a mechanical restoration on it. Unfortunately, that was right before COVID hit so getting the necessary parts was practically impossible. IF/When I get it finished, I want to have a mechanically fresh/reliable/comfortable old pickup to putz around in. Being a Lariat it's a loaded pickup with all the power accessories, cruise/tilt and air conditioning and it's also remarkably complete somewhat like this one: www.gaaclassiccars.com/vehicles/33119/1986-ford-f150-xlt-lariat . I just need to find room in one of my garage bays to start working on it. Ford fanatics have nicknamed EVERY F-series generation from 1948 to present: 1948-52 "Bonus Built" 1953-56 "Effies" 1957-60 "Fridge" (alluding to their aerodynamic capability) 1961-66 "Slick Sixties" 1967-72 "Bumpsides" 1973-79 "Dentsides" 1980-86 "Bullnose" 1987-91 "Bricknose" 1992-97 "Aeronose" (a.k.a. "OBS", though that's also attributed to 1988-2002 Chebbies). 1997-2004 "Triton" (also derisively referred to as "Jellybean")

So next up is jumpering the relay to see if the pump runs to determine if the fuel pump or the relay has failed. Once that's fixed, it goes to my friend's house to get the tank dropped and start the rust work. I'll put some more video up at some point.

So I got my youngest into the garage with me and we accessed he fuse panel and took out the relay. After putting a jumper wire together we tested the circuit and the pump ran (thank everything good because the fuel pump is in the tank) so I ordered a new relay. With the car running again I'll be able to change the oil and the transmission filter and fluid, then it's ready to be transported to my buddy's place.

Glad to hear you're working on it with help!
I hadn't thought to there being more Quantums that needed work.
I'd just sort of figured there was one, it worked fine now, and Kris Nickles was driving Jake around in it, and that was that.
But I guess I oughta pay attention to your current Quantum issue a bit more.

So I got the fluids changed and got the car started by adding the relay. To quote my good buddy Howard, it runs like a bag of assholes. But it did run, so I got it out of the garage and to the side of the house so I could bring the Phaeton in. The Quantum will go to my friend Howard in the coming weeks to begin the rust work, and trying to figure out why it runs so poorly. As a side note, I thought I'd found a grille for it. They said they had an NOS (New Old Stock) one on the shelf. It doesn't fit the '87 model year, it's for an older one. So I had to pony up to order one from LATVIA. That's right, I'm ordering German car parts for a US model from Eastern Europe. Oh and it's loud as fuck.

It was in one of my news feeds last week. There is a video of a Ukranian mechanic trying to repair a captured Russian tank. The Ukranian called the Russian tank manufacturers customer help line for help getting the captured tank running. The video shows the guy talking on his cell phone to the Customer Service dude. The Ukranian got the technical information he needed and some more information about the tanks problem areas then he trolled the Customer Service dude before telling him who and where he was and why the tank was broken.

Love it!
On a side note I called the guys that sent me the wrong grille. They noted that they have a discrepancy between the online system and their internal one that shows which model years work for that part. They said they would just refund me, no point in sending it back...so now I need an earlier model Quantum for this grille. Right? Of course right.

The Quantum was moved to my buddy's shop this past weekend. I may be able to start the rust work at the end of next month. While it's there I'm going to do the timing belt and water pump. I'm still trying to stitch a few video0's together that I took of the underside and the engine.
