Proving that you can find just about anything on You Tube, I watched this video to see if it could help me diagnose the problem. You see, late last summer, the van started to hesitate but because it was doing so intermittently, I was thinking mechanical problem. After speaking to a local VW guy, he actually gave me the same test procedure as the video. I've hung the odd ceiling fan, etc, but by and large I hate electrical work and I'm not overly fond of getting shocked. So, the option of using a wire in the center slot and cranking it to check for spark wasn't at the top of my list. As it happens, we did that and there was no spark, still - dead ECM (computer). So I'll call on Tuesday and see if he has one kicking around that won't break the bank.

Well, it wasn't the ECM - I did the checks again before I ended up buying something I didn't need. I accomplished this by swapping the computers between the 88 and the 91 (they are interchangeable from 86-91 with the 2.1 wasserboxer). The red bus still started, but the blue was still no-go. Previously the hall sender tested good, but on further tests - removing the distributor and hooking it to the red bus's hall sender harness and spinning the distributor - no spark. Bad hall sender. Ordered a used distributor, that should get the blue bus mobile again.

Glad to hear it was something less expensive. Hope it works well when you get the new (to you) part.

I have no idea what that lion is all about.
Instead of the 250-300 computer, it turned out to be the hall sender. The hall sender is 140 bucks, but a complete replacement distributor (which contains the hall sender) was about 70 bucks. So I parted with the money. The part arrived and I thought you all might want to join in on the big moment.

Okay, Dave-- you have done something I thought impossible.
You got ME-- non-mechanical me-- to watch a video about distributor and hall sender replacement. I have to admit, I was intrigued.

No gears to mesh together, just a couple fingers. Try a V8 where you have to get the gears in the right position, but also engage the oil pump. You're still a motor head. You just go for the flat four.

My thought, Paul, with sharing it was because so many of you have trekked through pages where Lucien describes the things that have been done - but not to excess because unless you're a car guy, you may not enojy or even be able to picture what's going on. With this, however, I thought folks might like getting to see 'Lucien's' bus get fired up. I moved it today to seal the driveway, and ran out of sealer. Ugh.
