Great story, as always. I have never had a Sanataria Springs story I disliked. I especially liked the development of Nikolai. I always liked him because he was rescued from a place where he was told he was evil and hell-bound. If it were not for the favor of the new president of Romania, he would NEVER have been able to escape. That is, in my opinion, hell itself. (Side note, So, second chances and all.
I always noticed that Nikolai was overly-sexual but I never actually considered the reason why. I always assumed it was always a combination of his personality and a result of him misunderstanding how open America is about non-traditional sexualities. I never considered that he is over-compensating for love lost in Romania.
But now it has made me think, perhaps his life in Romania has destroyed him more than he will let on or, perhaps, even knows. Maybe, because he was punished so severely for being made to perform “the hand sex” on another boy at the orphanage (I don’t think he will actually tell anyone the full story on that). Perhaps they broke his love map or broke his perception of love. I think it is possible that Nikki associates sexual attraction with love or thinks sexual attraction is all there is to love. Of course, all that could also be a result of raging hormones. Of course, we will never know until we get a Nikki POV story.
Of course, I always wondered how much Nikolai was affected by his life in Romania. Does his life in Sanitaria Springs seem too good to be true for him? Does he, in the back of his mind, dread the day that he wakes up, back in Romania and shunned by everyone, with everything that happened in the past year simply being a fantasy that could never come true? Because surely his Big Brother Alexander would never be able to find him let alone love someone like him. Surely Alexander would never feel the same way he does about males, because no other male on the planet feels that way - it is perverse and a reversal of nature itself! Surely no one could even tolerate the existence of someone like him - someone evil in his very core - and of course he has to be evil! After all, God killed his parents to punish him because of the way he would turn out! No person could ever love or want someone that even God, who loves everyone, hates.
I am, of course, just musing what Nikolai's darkest thoughts could be.
But here I am, talking about Nikolai in a story not about him. This story was about Nate and his maturation and the realization that he was using and abusing people without even realizing it. Nate is incredibly perceptive, more than I think he realizes. He is growing up and maturing, even though, with the death of his mother, he has every right to give in to his baser desires and disregard what everyone else thinks!
