I saw a Vanagon AW with a Surfboard on a roof rack, in opposing traffic, today in Phoenix. It was in really good shape, no rust, and it was Blue. The siting motivated me to check this forum tonight.
It's probably just me, but I never "got" the picture for the story "Meet The Parents". It is a Gremlin pictured, isn't it?
I think Alec's car is referred to as a Nissan, along with rust bucket, POS and other things in most of the stories.
The picture does convey the rusty wreck Alec bought and drove though, so I guess that met the need and most of the readers probably aren't old enough to know what the car pictured is.
But it always makes me think of my friends then new, Gremlin. And then to some Gremlin X's I came in contact with. I finally decided to Google Gremlin X. I was very surprised by the results. I have included one clip link that I found amusing. As usual there are other Gremlin related videos suggested at the link. I was in my 20's in the 70's. I don't know if anybody else here was that age then, but the clip might amuse fellow Dog House visitors any way.
Clip title: Mercedes SL500 VS. AMC Gremlin, Clip length 00:52. It is a late model Mercedes against a 72 AMC Gremlin X. Anybody here remember AMC?

It is a Gremlin. Believe it or not, I couldn't find a picture of a rusted out Sentra and...in a twist to me, Lug had written the car in as a Sentra in his story so it was now canon. In previous stories I hadn't listed the actual make and model so I did my best to find something that would represent his POS.
I do remember AMC, and man they had some ugly cars. I think it was the Ambassador or Matador I sort of liked and I used one in 'The Meaning of Living'. AMC was an inside joke for my 'motorhead' readers, Lug and Driver. My godmother owned a purple Gremlin once upon a time.

My Cherokee is early enough to be an AMC. Cool. Your sentence implies you still have it. I'd like to see a picture. Do you drive it regularly? The friend that had the Gremlin came back from leave with it. He went on leave in his 75 Jeep Cherokee. We were disappointed with the Cherokee compared to the CJ5 that he traded in. I still had my 74 CJ5 and our trail ride/camping trips were never the same. We packed more stuff in it but couldn't chase each other through the same places anymore. His CJ5 had the 304 V8 in it. The Cherokee had the 6. Apparently when he got to the AMC JEEP EAGLE dealership in his home town he was so mad at the Cherokee he traded it for the Gremlin. Dave, if your reading this, GAWD wanted me to tell you I saw another Blue Vanagon today. It wasn't AWD and it wasn't as shiny as the surfboard one. I hope things are going well for you guys. Temperatures here are going below 100 so it's time for me to hit the trails in my current hobby. NEAL

I drive it daily. WOW! I like it. My 2016 Cherokee isn't as clean as yours in this picture. Is that a Chevy Bow Tie in front of the hood? If it is whats under the hood? Except for Brand and model name I don't think the have much in common anymore. I don't have access to facilities and tools like I use to. I can't make adjustments, repairs and mods like I use to, so I just make monthly payments.

It runs a small block Chevy. 305 for now but it works well. It's a little rougher than the first pic. That was 5 years ago. It came with a 2.8 Chevy V6. Good thing the crank was broke. The small block fell right in.
