Is this a function of the discussion board service we use or is it something that's happening on my end. Every couple of days I find I've been auto logged out and don't realize it. Not a major thing, just a minor irritant in the overall scheme of things.

I find it logs me out if I close the browser or turn the PC off. I don't know why.

I get logged out for no apparent or logical reason. Sometimes I've not even left the computer and it's only been an hour. Other times it might be a week. lol The vagaries of the computer age, I guess.

I don't know anything about the technical details at freeforums.net, but looking at the cookies currently set for doghouse.freeforums.net, there is one session cookie called session_id. My guess is that the session_id value identifies a login session, and once you lose track of that value your login session is inaccessible. My speculation is that any time you access doghouse.freeforums.net with session_id undefined (i.e., when you've logged out or you're in a new browser session), it behaves as if you aren't logged in. There is also one cookie set for .freeforums.net (_gid) with a timeout about 24 hours in the future. That one gets its expiration time updated when I interact with the server, e.g., when I switch from the Quick Reply editor to the full post editor, so I suspect it may implement an idle-time timeout of some sort, but that's a lot more speculative than my guess for session_id.

Mine logs me out if I shut off the computer. Otherwise, it seem to take hours or maybe close to a day before I am logged out from inactivity.
However, since more than one person uses my computer, I make a habit of logging out of email or forums when I am done, instead of waiting for the system to log me out.

I never log in unless I'm going to make a post.

I never log in unless I'm going to make a post. I like to see the new post icons. It helps me know if I should proceed further, otherwise I'd do the same.

I check the forum once a day and even though I'm logged out, I see bold-face type indicating boards that have new posts within the past 24 hours and within the boards, those posts less than 24 hours old.

No issue for me. Never a problem.

I checked the Admin settings to see if there was something a person could choose or if the board had a setting that affected that and there wasn't one I could find. That doesn't mean it doean't exist...
