I was just rereading some old stories and came across this one. I remember reading the first chapter years ago, but nothing after that was familiar. So, this must be one that I missed.
My first thought after reading this is that, Dave, either you have a photographic memory for song lyrics OR you spent a monumental amount of time on research. I can't imagine the effort it took to write something like this. Amazing!
I love the concept behind this story. Again, either you have an amazing amount of knowledge about aphasia and the different forms it can take, or you did a lot of research. I am constantly pleasantly surprised by the quality of writing that is available by "amatuer" writers on the net, and especially here on your site.
Well done!

Okay, now I'm going to have to go check this out. I think I've read all of Dave's work but It's possible I may have missed something. Stranger things have happened, and I don't recall anything in your descriptions that rings a bell with me so... Off we go to check it out! Thanks :-)
Edit: Yes! I remember this one now! Great story, and if memory serves there is at least one sequel. Maybe two. One of them would be The Tull Unification, I think.

One of my favorites, but one that sorely needs a facelift. There were no sequels to it - however it is tied by one character to the serial 'Breaking Masks', co-authored by Josh Aterovis and myself.

Oh, yeah, the past is foggy and getting foggier every year. LOL Yes, I recall the connection to Breaking Masks. The Tull Unification has its own deal going on with at least passing mention of the band Jethro Tull, and has its own sequel, perhaps. I was confusing the name of the character in this story, Jake Tull, with the name of the other story.

By the way, I'd totally forgotten about Dad and the George Foreman Grill. Totally hilarious! Somewhere among our stuff we have one of those things that someone gifted us. Never been used! I think this story influenced its fate.

Yeah! I thought the George Foreman grill thing was pretty funny too. How could anyone actually think they could make eggs on a GF grill? My mom had one of those that she used a LOT when she first got it (for normal thing, like hot dogs, burgers and sausages) but I think it's been relegated to the back of the cupboard in a corner of the kitchen for years now.
P.S. I had a heck of a time finding a link for "Breaking Masks." I searched all over the site and finally did a google search and found a link from there. I had to bookmark that link because even after I found it, I still couldn't find it again from DaBeagle dot net.

Breaking Masks is a collaboration - so it's listed under Collaborative works rather than just under my name. Toy Soldiers, which Ryan Bartlett and I co-wrote and others are also listed there. I think that's why you struggled to find it.

I think that's why you struggled to find it. For the two-author collaborations (i.e., all of them other than Baysville) you might think about adding a link to the story under each of the authors who has other stories here, perhaps with some sort of flag to indicate that it's a collaboration, e.g., "Breaking Masks *" with a footnote or a comment at the top of the page indicating that "*" indicates a story written in collaboration with another author. (I know, like you really need more work at the moment.)

Breaking Masks was the first collaboration I ever read. I can't remember if it was on Dabeagle or elsewhere. I just remember agonizing that it seemed to dribble out so slowly! lol
I never read Baysville. I always told myself that one day I'd do that. It seemed to be posted nearly everywhere. Then the sites it was on began to disappear and the sites that still had it posted began to have dead links for some of the Baysville tales. Anyone know if it's still available intact anywhere?

Possibly the wayback machine. I don't have permission to carry them all nor do I have contact, or knowledge of how to contact, the Eggman who ran the Glass Onion. David in HK was in charge of that years ago - moving it here, that is - but we were running into my technical limitations and he was editing some of the stories to remove or change names that some had wanted excluded and shorten some others that had some, uh, repetitive items that didn't advance their stories.
I'm willing to host it, just need files.

Yup. Definitely on the Wayback Machine. web.archive.org/web/20050312091306/http://www.theglassonion.org:80/stories.htmlI'm not sure I ever knew any of the authors there but I've not yet looked to see who they are/were. Funny thing about that topic though. Early on in my time on the web reading this genre of fiction I discovered quite by accident that I knew one of the authors who had stories hosted on various sites, including his own, personally, in real life. That discovery was both a pleasing and a jolting one, all of it positive.

I read the entire story (Long Day) several years ago and then came back and re-read it during the early months of the pandemic in 2020. I loved it, at least partly because it gave me a glimpse of what it might be like to have that disability, and what it might be like to help someone with that. The characters and their attitudes and struggles seemed as if they could be quite real. I found myself caring about them. 2.) I'm posting in a thread that is, what, three years old. Is that frowned upon here? (I ask because I did this once on another forum in a totally unrelated field and was vividly criticized for breaking an unwritten rule of that other forum.)

The post just before yours is from this year - it's not even seven months old yet. I think you're OK. (And from what I've seen, this is a pretty relaxed crowd.)
