I'm a fan of Jim Butcher's 'Dresden Files' and his serial 'The Codex Alera', so I thought I'd give his son's book a try.
There is no gay content to be had, though the hetero is fairly low level for most of the book. There is no mandatory heterosexual subplot that winds it's way through the book and causing bad decisions and such. The magic system isn't actually explained, which is both good and bad. I prefer some idea of what's going on, but this moves forward as if you already understand. The main focus is a murder and how two unlikely people get from one end to the other.
It's reasonably interesting, though I wasn't so enamored that I'm anxious to find book 2.
