Has anyone else here read Michael Gilbert's short stories about his British secret agents, Calder and Behrens?
His two books of short stories about these men are Mr. Calder And Mr. Behrens and Game Without Rules. Both are excellent. Most of the stories take place in the 1960s against a Cold War enemy, but there is one story where a very young Behrens attemts to aide the anti-Hitler movement inside Germany.
I'm not sure exactly why I like these stories so well. Spy stories are not usually my cup of tea (except for Tinnean's stories about Vincent and Mann - those I love). But the Calder and Behrens stories are elegantly plotted and their friendship is touching, I suppose. (I don't have a copy in front of me to be able to give a quote, and the two have separate residences, but it is clear to me, anyway, that theirs is a very very close friendship indeed.)
