This book takes us on a trip to a future where magic bloomed in the modern era, and then was used to destroy by necromancy. It uses a new type of magic system, building a world of competing interests and beliefs amid a desperate struggle for survival. It's refreshing to read a story of it's type, a true fantasy, with a gay protagonist where his sexuality is a portion of his whole, not the sole focus. I bought the paperback, but have not yet read the sequel. There is a free (I think) ebook that takes place just after the events in Runebinder and before the events of the second book, which I haven't yet purchased. If you like fantasy, it's worth reading.
