This book relies on many staples of the magic genre - budding magical ability in the teen years and an all-powerful shadow group with a side dish of a war for control going on. The main character is Juan, called Johnny which kind of washes the Latin background a bit for me. He has gauged ear wear, which isn't a pleasing mental image to me. His best friend, Alison, is trans. There is some sexual identity struggle. While the story is entertaining, it's best not to look too closely or the cracks show up readily. The ending was disappointing as the story didn't really end so much as it felt like it was truncated - there was no real resolution. If you want some easy fun as long as you don't think about it too hard, it's a decent read.
