This is a tough book, and I'm not ashamed to say a scene made me tear up - but not in a positive way. The book is told in a stream-of-consciousness style that is grammatically annoying. There are no quotation marks, and sometimes a new line is started to indicate a change of some type. At the same time I think this book covers some super important themes - growing up in a conservative (read asshole) environment, the role supportive parents plays in both success and failure, and also touches on conversion torture.
Ultimately the message is important, but it made me very sad as well. As I have done with tragic characters from other works - Crafting Mom, Stephen King - at some point you will all meet my version of Sean Marcus Rossini.
It's worth reading, and worth it for those that need hope.
