This judge gets it. The teacher, an adult, had sex with a 15 year old boy. Basically we're talking adult with a child. One of the major points this Judge makes is that if it were a male teacher with a female student, there would be a far different conversation. But in this case, friends and family of the child were writing letters of support to the teacher. Adults and kids is just never, ever a good idea. Read it here, and see what you think of the judge's position. That's pretty much exactly the story you wrote!
I did just have one other thought, though: If you liked the character of Devyn so much and you put him through an ordeal of this sort, I think I never want to see what you would do with a character you really don't like .
At least he has a good group of friends to support him, and he escaped from the situation before it truly damaged him.

I went back and to read Devyn's Song again and noticed an "Emerson" (a minor inconsistency; whose title origin stems from Ralph Waldo Emerson's famous remark that goes something like this: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds...") with relation to Dale, Devyn's father. In Song Dale works second shift. In Muttley Dale works days as a mechanic.
Since Dale has, in Muttley, worked the same place for several years, maybe he was working two jobs at the time? Whatever the answers, both are great stories.

At least I'm in good company. I'm 5' 7" depending on the convenience store I'm leaving.
