In light of some of the recent posts, I got to thinking: What IS the average percentage of gay and bisexual boys in high school?
I have seen so many statistics my head swims. From conservative and fundie causes I have seen 2-4% of kids are gay (and they rarely mention the bi side). From liberal sponsored research I hear that at least ten percent are gay. (Again, bisexuals are mostly left out or ignored). From Alfred Kinsey's original research, he classified 40-45 percent as gay/bi, but his sampling methodology leaves much to be desired. If my memory is correct (and it is a long time since I read Sexuality in the Human Male and Sexuality in the Human Female (Which I read in high school, on my own). He considered someone to be gay or bi if they had ONE same sex encounter, even if ten thousand other sexual experiences were with the opposite sex.
A lot of people lie about sexuality on surveys. I have done it at least twice, myself, over the years in so-called anonymous surveys. But when the sample size is too small, even "random" surveys by "neutral"
people can put your job in peril.
It took me until I was in my upper forties before I admitted to myself I am bi. As I get older, I seem to be turned on by fewer women and a higher percentage of males.
I applaud Cynus, as one of the few authors to squarely write about bisexuality as well as gayness. I think more men go for the same sex at first because sometimes it is easier and often with less drama than with an opposite sex partner. BUT, there sometimes is plenty of drama in same sex relationships as well, I have observed.
I think (but cannot prove) that there are a lot of bisexual guys in high school, but they get labeled as gay or straight by some of the early relationships they enter. Plus, if they wish to father kids, they are almost forced to go after females, unless they are willing to adopt or go through expensive surrogate procedures.
What do the rest of you think? Do a lot of guys go after girls because they want to appear straight? What do you think are the percentages? What are your feelings, regardless of what the "research" says?
