Wow! What a successful new Sanitaria Springs story... I enjoyed reading it, of course, because I've grown to care about the characters almost as if they could be real people. It was fun to experience again their banter and interactions and all the examples of how very much they care for each other. And the plot has me hooked! I'm dying to know what happens next.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, Mr. "Dabeagle".

Not real people? Great, now I have to tell a shrink about the voices in my head!

I keep telling them to leave me alone.

To keep your sanity, of course.

Well, the voices are at least in three of our heads, then---
In the four hours it took me to read this short story-- because of family and life interruptions-- I looked forward to finally reaching the first conclusion.
Definitely time Lucien realizes how much he means to so many people. Lucien is imitating Alec more than he realizes.

{...snip...} Definitely time Lucien realizes how much he means to so many people. Lucien is imitating Alec more than he realizes. Wow -you're right about Lucien imitating his big brother! (I hadn't spotted that 'til you pointed it out.) Wonder if that's partly why they bonded so well.

How could anyone not love Lucien? It's hard to pick a favorite because I love all of these characters so much but Lu definitely ranks near the top of the list, such an amazing, caring and tender heart. If you haven't commented yet, make sure you tell Dave how much you liked this story.

I'm sitting on the edge of my seat! I have to wait a week to find out how this ends. After reading Ticking I'm no longer sure of the outcome. Dabeagle has shown a dark side to his writing. Although... He does manage to end on an upbeat. Thank Goodness. The real question is what contortions will Lucien go through before this is over?

This story bugs me. The reason is that it threatens a lot of characters I've come to care about.
Lu and Derek could all get hurt out of this and they have very little voice in what is going to happen.
It would seem that the courts would have to pay attention to the will of older teens in these matters when they are in obviously stable environments and would be thrown back into questionable situations.
I've heard and seen a lot of really bad things about court decisions in these situations.

James, you are right - we were told that, when it comes to family court, there is so much leeway - sometimes it depends on if the judge has had their coffee, etc. It should be noted that Lucien's mother is pointing to a specific item as the underpinning to her argument and that would, likely, be the first step. Second, I'd point out that Derek's legal status was defined in this chapter, that the mother's argument would never fly. However, in the real world, that could be the case depending on the judge.
Part 2 posts this Sunday, from Robin's POV.

Lucien must be approaching 17 by now. Surely he'll be 17 by the time his mother could disrupt the adoption. In New York, 17 is the legal age of consent for marriage. Hmm…

Hmm… If it comes to that, Lucien could always just file to have himself emancipated, and then his mother wouldn't even have a claim to have custody, or disrupt the adoption.

This is great - I love people giving their thoughts as to what might happen, how things may resolve - the speculation is very, very exciting!
And you only have to wait 'till Sunday to find out if you were right!
