One of the things I like about the Springs is the different ways we've gotten where we are. Yes, there are groups that aren't represented in the stories we told - Lesbians, Trans, various faiths groups, the list goes on. However we do have Gay, straight, bi and, likely, a pan. I'm not sure my pea brain really gets the difference in sexual definitions outside if straight, gay and bi, but that's not my focus here.
*Spoilers if you haven't read 'The Evolution of Us' by Ryan Bartlett or 'Underdogs' by Cynus.
I think, easily, the most controversial and divisive thing we've written is Ryan's 'The Evolution of Us' and 'Autopsy' and, in a similar vein but not quite as controversial, is Cynus's 'Underdogs'. The reason why is the quasi - polyamorous relationships that develop. I had emails that accused, with respect to EoU, that there dind't need to be all the hand wringing for us to 'justify then wanting to sleep around'. Another reader, who is so against poly relationships that they wanted to know if there was any others (this after reading 'Underdogs') because they 'didn't want to waste their time if there is'.
Now, I understand folks not being interested in a type of story. I'm kind of burned out on vampires and werewolves, myself. I do wonder at the veracity of the upset that comes from poly relations. Some of the arguments are very similar to the ones used against gays - it's all about sex, for instance.
I think with both sets of 'poly' groups - Sasha, Alec, Kale and Chase and in the other, Seth, Logan and Grayson - there wasn't some mad dash for the bedroom. In fact, unless you are using some kind of drug I don't think people, in general, just fall into bed together - no matter what 'Getting Cock at the Service Station 16' might want you to think happens in the restroom or behind the lube rack. In each case there is a deliberate group of thoughts. Does that always happen? No, again I think if a couple finds a third after they've been drinking, maybe that's a catalyst. In each instance, that wasn't what the aim was. I had someone tell me that writing it in the way it was encouraging youth into thinking that it was okay. Well, it is.
I'm not saying it's right for you or me, but I don't get to make the rules - even where it comes to you, now do I? Some of what I've read about long term, voluntary (not forced situations like that Mormon cult - no, the other Mormon cult) relationships contain some items of truth. For instance, we are raised with the idea that we will find and marry that one person that fully completes us. Wow, no pressure, right? I mean, not only do you have to find that one in however many billion on the planet, but they have to find you. We frequently get different things from different people like our friends, for instance and sometimes that could develop into a having a sexual component, as has been displayed with the older group. Have we explored any jealousy or hurt feelings? No. Could we? Certainly. Is it relevant? It depends on what we find relevant - an entire story about that? Maybe. Would it simply fit into a larger conversation? I don't know.
In any case, I find discussions like this interesting and I thought you might enjoy it as well. There is an auto play of the audio on the page, so please mute or turn your sound down until you can pause - or simply be aware and turn it up.
