Of all my characters Sean is one I love more then I can really describe. This story gives him a new depth, shows some flaws and insecurities, and makes him that much more wonderful. Great job,Dave.

I just this minute finished reading The Exception. I'm speechless (in a good way).

Still processing this one (The Exception). I really like it as a piece of fiction about characters I have grown to care about deeply.
Clearly I was not a literature major in college; I have trouble analyzing stories. But I have been thinking a lot about what I like and why I like it.
Recently I've been reading a very long series of online serial novels elsewhere. I am interested in that other writer's characters, in what happens to them in the plots of his stories, so I guess I could say I care about his characters. But I don't care anywhere nearly as much about them as I do about the characters here. I've been trying to figure out why that is.
Maybe it is because the characters here are more complex, more well-developed as complicated human beings. In that other series of serial novels elsewhere, many of the characters are simpler, maybe not exactly stereotypical, but still, not nearly as complex as here. Maybe that's why I care more about what happens to the Sanitaria Springs folks?

Thank you for the comments. This story was born from an unfinished short story that inspired Ryan with 'A Funny Thing Happened...' which enabled this to occur. Ryan and I have tried very hard to stick to realism and, while focusing on the gay players, not eliminating the others from having anything to contribute - but as I said before, I'm a lot less interested in the straight characters. If I want to see lots of straight folks and storytelling there is TV and 90% of books.
For that reason there was some real debate about how far Sean could/would go. While there are families out there who have children who exclusively fall into the gay category, it does seem to stretch belief. That kids in such an obviously safe environment wouldn't follow their hearts, however, stretches that even farther. There was a lot going on here, and it's not quite done.
Sean was another 'side' character to have caught my eye. His experiences give him a depth that I have just scratched the surface of. Along with Robin and the elusive Logan, they are characters I long to delve deeper into. That's not to say I don't wish to do the same with many of the larger roles in our ensemble - I there is such a thing as 'enough' of Robin and Lu, for instance - not for me.

I have to agree with Silentreader from above. You guys have created realistic, believable characters that aren't stereotypical or even predictable.
I couldn't really decide whether I wanted Asher and Sean to get together in this episode or not. I didn't want Asher to get hurt, but I wanted him to be happy. I can see Sean wanting to do this for his friend, even though he really wasn't into it. He has always struck me as the more sensitive and considerate of the "near-twins." The fact that he agaonized over his decision proves that. He and Jamie really are good kids, in their own ways. They end up doing the right thing.
Let's hope Asher and Boomer find a connection when school starts.

Poor Asher. That kid deserves some good karma. All the crap he went through with his real family.
Then the scandal with Scott and the foster family, plus everyone knowing all of his business.
That part made me feel really creepy. Nothing feels quite like that.

Asher is stronger than he seems, stronger than he realizes.

He sorta has to be! A lot of people have hung themselves over way less than that kid has been through.

I love the entire Sanatari Springs stories. The Exception was exceptional. The great things about Dabeagles stories is that they are all classics that you enjoy reading over and over again.
Thanks!
