Sanitaria Springs was first started it was hoped to be a Round Robin style story in the spirit of Baysville, which I'd participated in a long time ago. It generated some results - some fine stories - but they were scattered, here and there and largely stand alone stories. The 'problem' with them was that things weren't moving, we just had these cool stories that were all set in the same town.
When Ryan Bartlett began speaking to me in November of 2014, he'd sent me a draft of his story 'Broken Hearted' and asked me to give it a look. I was pretty hard on Kale, at the time, and I'll share more of that later. But from that point on, the series exploded. With the stories hosted here, there are 57 chapters comprising more than 687 thousand words and in excess of 1200 pages. That does not include the stories that aren't hosted here - it's huge. Just so we're clear, I'm not limiting it to the stories Ryan and I wrote - I'm talking about all the ones I currently host to include Cynus, Pedro and Lug.
The big thing about this thread is that I'm going to share some behind the scenes conversation about the development of the story, the actual words we used when making some decisions and also posting some incomplete manuscripts. From the first process, I hope you get an idea of the kind of discussion that happened in creating and plotting stories. In the second, you may see how some incomplete ideas came to form other stories, or how ideas were abandoned as they no longer fit the narrative.
Above all, it's everything Sanitaria.

Baysville was OK, but with everyone being gay sucks it dry. I like SS. New lively characters. Never a dull moment.

If we were going to talk about the notion of the story being interactive or multi participant, I do have to be honest that I've wished for a long tme that I could write some stories or characters to contribute.
I've often tried to start a stories of my own (not necessarily focused on the gay lifestyle) maybe looking at some of the same things, and I've always looked to dabeagle to reference, for sharp satirical dialogue and well defined, believable and realistic characters.
Somehow, I just can't get a story off the ground, but believe me, if I could have completed something, I would have offered it to you.

As I've mentioned before in other comments, as a writer I'm not all that interested in the straight folks stories. I can see that if I turn on the TV or pick up 99% of books. In a way I think we're conditioned to look for that, given what we're presented with our whole lives in terms of entertainment - but I write gay characters and, I think, you all come to read them.
Also, Ryan and I took deliberate steps to explore different ideas along the spectrum of the gay side of sexuality - from being bi, to experimentation, to 'ever since I escaped the womb I've been trying to avoid pussy'. Just as with straight folks, there are tons of ways to express that gay experience and they aren't always immediately apparent. Sometimes we fight it. Sometimes that fight is forced on us. Sometimes...it's easy. But when that part is, others aren't.
When I originally wrote Asher, I was angling to put him with Sean. Through our discussions, Ryan and I knew that there are families where many of the siblings are gay or questioning or experimenting - thus the basis for why I didn't have a logical problem with it. Ryan just said 'fuck it, I want them to be happy'.
Sean and Asher have a three story arc, and the finale is '2 Low 4 Zero', which is written. Once i can get going again, and get the Lu story together, you guys will have a few uninterrupted weeks of SS before the completed story pool runs dry.

Not a big deal. You've had a good run this time, and it's because someone lit a fire under your backside. I'm slowly working on a couple of SS stories using my characters.

I didn't mean it quite like that, and your stories have enough not specifically gay characters in them (well, mostly girls, parents and teachers, ha-ha).
It's the relationships you portray that are always more important to me: the families you build. I wish they could be real. \ Anyway... Sean and Asher are my new favorite couple, so you better not do anything that doesn't build up their relationship, because '2 Low 4 Zero' sounds a little ominous to me for a story title.

Thanks Greys

I have had a very hard time writing since he died. My story will be next, and then the rest as listed in the 'Future of Sanitaria Springs' thread. D

While I agree with your point, I think that there are still some interesting stories to be told about people who may not be same sex attracted themselves but still have a strong connection to it - the early Jamie and Sean stories are a good example of this. They provide an often unexplored perspective, in addition to making SS feel even more real, which is partially what draws me to it (the other being simply the well written characters). On a marginally related note, while I enjoy seeing life reflected in SS, I get a little bit of a thrill when I read about something on HuffPost or similar could easily have happened in one of the stories - like that guy who took his gay friend to prom, or a star high school football player opening up about the coming out process, etc. It's....nice. Not that I'm going soft or anything. >_>

For instance, there was a note making it's way around that I ended up using in the original Sanitaria Springs; in fact, in some ways, the story was a set up to use that cool note. Homecoming was built around the image used for that story - one I shared with Ryan and it bugged him and bugged him as he bitched that he was trying to work on something else except this damn picture was in his head, now. A future story, already written, focuses on a story that was popular several months ago and yet another, A Funny Thing Happened..., popped up very quickly in the form of a Reddit forum about a straight guy who'd had a gay experience. One never knows where you'll find inspiration. Also, I find Jamie and Sean more interesting the way they are developing, although they may not have much farther to go. My mother wants to see a psychic this Friday and wanted me to drive her, as it's in the evening. Who knows? If Ryan speaks to me, maybe there will be more.
