We had a funeral yesterday for a relative. My partner's mother, actually. I did most of the arranging of details so as to lighten the load for my partner. It wasn't much really, or at least I did not think it was.
Then beginning about 11 AM yesterday the house began filling with family. We had a catered meal then on to the funeral home for the service, and afterwards the funeral dinner, also catered. Afterward the closest family came back to the house with most leaving in the mid evening with the exception of one brother and family who stayed till midnight. Today I am just about shattered with exhaustion as is my other half. We are just DONE!
Then I got a phonecall from the head of the maintenance department at work telling me that he found a note on my desk when he was in on Saturday stating that during swing shift Friday night there was a power surge and a couple of the computers that my department literally cannot run without got fried so I have that to face when I go in at 5 AM first thing Monday morning... sigh...

Ugh! That is just one exhaustion atop another! I'm so sorry for you and your partners loss. The computers will be a ehadache, no doubt, but I have to wonder why they weren't shielded from a surge?

That's the crazy thing, Dave, they were surge protected. We have a very expensive UPS on both. I'm suspicious that the night supervisor decided to unplug them from the UPS for some reason but I'm also sure that I will never know the real answer to that question.

My condolences on what you're going through, my friend. I hope you're able to get some quality rest tonight and be able to face this new issue refreshed.

Thanks, both of you. I'm really hoping for that "quality rest" you spoke of, Sam.

My condolences on your, and your partner's, loss. I've lost both my parents and I think I can understand the loss you're feeling.
Simiretirement is wonderful. I'm at a point in my life where I don't have to work. I work part time for my local library doing computer training and supervision. (I'm NOT in the IT department, thank goodness.) I enjoy what I'm doing and am glad for the chance at my age to get out and be useful. But in the back of my mind I know that any time the job becomes too burdensome, or management becomes unreasonable in their demands I can walk away and not suffer.
Good luck Monday morning. I hope everything resolves itself satisfactorily. Take a deep breath and remember that, "This too shall pass." You can only do the best you can do. -- John

Teddy, you are probably right on both counts. IF the UPS is okay and the computers are not, that would be VERY suspicious. If there is a lack of electrical outlets in the room, that even more increases the probability that your suspicions are correct. Sympathy extended to you and your partner on the recent loss. I have one parent left, well over the age of 95, and my spouse lost both parents some years back. It is often difficult to deal with the loss of a parent or an in-law. May your month of March be much better for you and your partner.

Thanks, John. I had planned on having tomorrow off because I knew that an extra day would be very beneficial to our psyche but with the computer failure I have to go in. Thankfully I have the required backups of the programs those computers need to control the machines that are dependent on them plus I have backups of the machine specific calibrations that need to be loaded into the software once it is installed. I will have to call in the manufacturer of the machines that the computers control to actually do the installation of that backup software because the installation cannot be done simply by inserting a CD in the drive. So yeah, this too shall pass.

I'm positive the mystery will remain "unsolved" even though we will pretty much know the basic story of what has happened. We do have a week's vacation scheduled for a couple of weeks from now. Right now that can't come soon enough!

Well, the computers weren't fried as had been reported. Both of them had definitely lost power suddenly and were busy grinding away attempting to self repair corrupted sectors or whatever when the night supervisor shut them down and reported that they were kaput. I went in an hour early this AM, started both systems up, and seeing their condition I allowed them to grind away then automatically reboot. Magic! They were both up and running before shift started.
Dang, I love it when something goes right for a change!
Now as to why they went bad in the first place, he denies that they were disconnected from the UPS...
