A couple weeks back the owner of my company purchased and installed a new machine in the department that I supervise. I generally do not operate the machinery, only supervise the operation, but since it was new equipment he wanted me involved in the initial shakedown. At any rate the Programmable Logic Control (PLC) seemed to be encountering bad inputs or sending improper outputs. Long story short I got hurt, not terribly but it did require a few stitches, a day off work, light duty upon my return, and a workman's comp claim.
Fast forward to yesterday lunch and I got called to the HR office, told the company was restructuring, given my final check, pink slip, severance pay, and escorted to the parking lot with no further explanation.
I have no clue whether the two things are interconnected and frankly I don't really give a shit. Yeah, I could try to challenge it but frankly the record in this state for winning challenges in a nonunion shop is abysmal and would mean loss of the substantial severance they provided.
Yeah, I'm bummed but my life is not over. I'm actually considering starting my own small service related business of some sort which is a bit of an exciting appeal. Having owned a business in the past there is a lot to be said for not working for someone else, but there are also a lot of bookkeeping headaches that I simply want no part of as I'm terrible at understanding and accomplishing even the minimal things I need to do to keep the bookkeeping service happy with me.
Anyhow this is what is happening in my life, either for good or ill. I fucking hate change but this too shall pass.
