Wow! What a story!
I have not read many stories somewhat similar to this. But this one, however, was superbly written, and underscores the need to tell those we love that we love them. I hate to say too much in regard to specific details about the story, in case someone would read this before reading the story.
To read The Space Between, you can find it at: www.dabeagle.com/stories/dabeagle/sanitaria_springs/tsb.html And have some facial tissues handy.
There are a couple of aspects present which remind me of the last two chapters of Ryan Bartlett's story, My Secret Identity. I am hoping that one will be arriving here sometime, perhaps after Toy Soldiers concludes? Yes, much of that story is considerably less "serious" than The Space Between, but there are life and love lessons of several kinds found in that fun story, as well.
Thanks to all writing in the Sanitaria Springs series for the love being shown more and more as the characters gain life experience and are better able to read shades of meaning.

I was reminded of two other stories, but I will have to go hunting for them before I can post details.

My Micah, turned 51 this week. His son, my grandson, returned home from a tour of duty in Germany with my newest great grand daughter. Like Micah this goofy kid on my caseload has become the glue that helps hold the fabric of my life together. This story like many of yours runs on a parallel with me. Thanks for another one. Think I need to share some love. Pax. Steve

I hesitated to write this story, initially calling it my 'Scrooge' story. Not really accurate considering Alec isn't a rich miser, but really more about where they all are at, in their heart of hearts so that sets the tone for where they are going.
We all get affected differently by life's events and something that was minor for some is major for others. Some mundane event, like tripping over a ball, leads us to the great love of our life as a for instance.
I don't want to reveal more, except to say, I hope this chapter answers Lug's question.

I'll know the question when I read it.

I now know the question. It was a story that needed to be written.

I've read it twice and keep finding stuff I missed before. Time 3 is on deck.

I found it hard to get into My Secret Identity, and never finished it, and I have yet to read Toy Soldiers, so no spoilers, please. . I found most of Ryan's writings on this site to be much more mature in development, including the most recent postings.
This story, though, was classic Dabeagle. Actually it seemed more like it was his story notes for all the stories. It was a good way to show all the threads tying the other stories together, and what all the characters know in their unconscious minds, but haven't had a chance to say.
Alternate realities are always fun to explore, but it's good that this one never had to be realized, because Alec is more important to all his friends and family than any of them realize. Losing him is simply not an option for any of them.

Far fetched? Can't wrap your head around it?

Can't wrap your head around it? That works.
I'm more into the SS stories, but I think I should give Toy Soldiers a try.

I think you should too. Give my Secret Identity another shot. It may be far fetched but it's far from average.
